Grade 310 Stainless Steel is designed for high-temperature service, combining excellent high-temperature properties with good ductility and weldability. It resists oxidation in continuous service at temperatures up to 1150°C, provided there are no reducing sulfur gases present. It can also be used for intermittent service at temperatures up to 1040°C.
Grade 310S (UNS S31008) is suitable for environments involving moist corrodents at temperatures lower than typical "high-temperature" service. The lower carbon content in 310S reduces its high-temperature strength compared to 310.
Both grades exhibit excellent toughness, even at cryogenic temperatures, although other grades are typically used in cryogenic environments.
Grade 310L is a variant with a maximum carbon content of 0.03%. It is sometimes used in specific corrosive environments, such as urea production.
