Products Description
ASTM A240 Type 309 Stainless Steel and ASTM A240 Type 309S Stainless Steel are both austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel grades. They offer excellent resistance to corrosion and heat, as well as good strength at both room temperature and elevated temperatures.
ASTM A240 Type 309S Stainless Steel is very similar to Type 309, with the main difference being a lower carbon content. This reduced carbon content helps minimize the precipitation of carbides, which can improve the weldability of the material. Both types of stainless steel are essentially nonmagnetic in their annealed (fully softened) condition. However, they can exhibit slight magnetic properties when cold worked. These stainless steel grades are commonly used in applications where corrosion resistance and heat resistance are required. They are often employed in environments involving high temperatures, such as furnace parts, heat exchangers, and kiln linings. The nonmagnetic nature of these steels in the annealed state is beneficial in certain applications.Overall, ASTM A240 Type 309 Stainless Steel and ASTM A240 Type 309S Stainless Steel are similar in their characteristics, with the main difference being the carbon content and its impact on weldability. These grades are chosen for their excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and strength properties, making them suitable for various industrial applications.Alloys 309 and 309S are austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steels commonly used in high-temperature applications. These alloys offer excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, and heat resistance, while also providing good strength at both room and elevated temperatures. The main difference between Alloys 309 and 309S lies in their carbon content.Alloy 309 (UNS S30900) is specifically designed for use in high-temperature corrosion resistance applications. It exhibits resistance to oxidation up to 1900°F (1038°C) under non-cyclic conditions. However, frequent thermal cycling can reduce its oxidation resistance to approximately 1850°F (1010°C).With its high chromium and low nickel content, Alloy 309 can be used in environments containing sulfur at temperatures up to 1832°F (1000°C). However, it is not recommended for highly carburizing atmospheres as it only offers moderate resistance to carbon absorption. Alloy 309 can be employed in slightly oxidizing, nitriding, cementing, and thermal cycling applications, although the maximum service temperature must be reduced. When heated between 1202°F and 1742°F (650°C and 950°C), Alloy 309 is susceptible to sigma phase precipitation. A solution annealing treatment at 2012°F to 2102°F (1100°C to 1150°C) can restore its toughness. On the other hand, Alloy 309S (UNS S30908) is a low carbon version of the alloy, primarily chosen for ease of fabrication. Alloy 309H (UNS S30909) is a high carbon modification developed for enhanced creep resistance. In most cases, the grain size and carbon content of the plate can meet the requirements of both 309S and 309H.Alloy 309 can be easily welded and processed using standard shop fabrication practices. The specifications for Alloys 309 and 309S are UNS S30900 and UNS S30908, respectively.
